str8 up gansta… haa haa

It is such a long story. My father needs some type of help to move him from PA to my area in Tampa. He is totally paralyzed from the neck down. One day after work he went up on the roof of the house he was building for us and slipped and fell off. This happened in 1978 just before I went into the USAF. Slowly everything, my dad had worked for, vanished. All of his expensive tools antiques and other valuables were gone. We lost our home and antique cars etc.. I retired after 22 years in the Air Force and was going to move dad down to FL. Well I have parkinsons and now on disability and have a small fixed income. I just spent a week at his house trying to help him. The state of PA has taken most of my dads money away because a caregiver got mad about something stupid. This person about 2 years ago turned my dad in for selling HIS van for extra cash one winter. Because of that the state canceled his disability payment. I cant do anymore… I have emailed Ellen Degeneres, written to my senator and after 2 years we have gotten no were with this. Dad can no longer pay for the 24 hour a day care he should have. The folks that respond to his add for help are not qualified care givers. He only gets a visit once a month from a nurse to change his catheter. They are cleaning his wounds and feeding him and moving him in and out of bed. Some of these people are scary and I had to call the police to remove people we did not know. My dad sometimes sits in his wheelchair for 15-21 hours a day and the same in bed when caregiver’s don’t show up. That means he is sitting on his bed sores and he has no way to get water or food. Same when they put him into bed. His hospital bed is in disgusting shape. Likewise his motorized wheel chair is old and nasty looking. He has been trying to get his house fixed up a bit so he can sell it and move near me. He just got a letter stating that foreclosure proceedings will begin in 30 days. He also owes the gas company nearly $9,000 bucks. So they shut off his gas. The second story of his 100 year old house is in terrible shape. He cant find anyone that can help finish a small renovation. When you are in the room you can see sunlight from numerous cracks in the walls. The floors are all slanted. The main sewer line is leaking in the basement. He had more than $1,600 stolen from him in the last 4 months. When he is put into bed he is trapped because of being paralyzed. Then the caregiver leaves for the night and my dad stays in the house alone till the next morning. Please can anyone forward this info to a charity or help me by suggesting a place where we can get help. He does not want to spend another cold winter in upper PA. Thanks..

Sorry to hear of your dad’s situation , unfortunately it is wayyy too common .
Given the implosion of the economy , celebrities and government agencies have far more requests for aid then they have resources to process.
My father needed assistance after brain surgery and I ended up the surrogate nursing home staff .
I did 24 hour days for weeks and 7 day weeks for most of the spring .
What gets done now , is what we do ourselves .

The details you gave about the house condition and foreclosure indicate that it would be impossible to rehab AND sell before eviction .
Especially since next to nothing is selling in the rust belt .

I suggest you begin plans immediately to transport him to your place . Go to a car rental and get the largest passenger van with unlimited miles . Put him and whatever memorabilia will fit into it and drive him to Florida .
Or , go to RV America and rent the small RV for a week to get him down to Florida .
Is there any family to assist with the ride to Florida ?
Maybe ask at your parish church if someone could ride with you to help physically move him in & out of the van or RV .

If there is any family left , ask them to assist in a yard sale of any other large belongings , Shipping them would cost more than getting replacements in Florida .

He has stayed there longer than he should have already ,
Make arrangements for his relocation now and ignore the debt ,
As he will never have the capacity to pay it . Maybe he should file for bankruptcy .

And once he gets to Florida , contact a reputable home health care service for in home assistance there .
Home health is covered under Medicare .

Good luck and praying for you
