two electric wheelchairs racing down the drivewayMy husband was in a car accident and is now an incomplete paraplegic. Marijuana is the only thing he can take that reduces his muscle spasms, relieves the pain, doesn’t constipate him, it’s like a cure. Everything the doctors try to prescribe to him wipes him out, he turns into an nonfunctional human being, these pain meds constipated him, and he had to take multiple medications for his spasms and pain and constipation from the medicine and they all have different side effects that the doctor will just try to prescribe some other medication with some other side effect!!! Like they would prescribe stool softeners for the constipation that the pain meds caused then due to him having lack of control to his BM’s (well you guess what would happen!) It’s ridiculous! He never even tried doing the stuff until he was in a physical rehabilitation hospital after his car accident. He met a quadriplegic guy his age, an older man with a wife and kids who was in a wheel chair due to a stroke, and an old lady who drive around in a motorized wheel chair who all smoked marijuana together in a parking lot beside the hospital. The old lady would drag them in their wheel chairs with her motorized wheel chair. lol. But seriously we are in Alberta, Canada does anyone know what the process is to getting medical marijuana?
It sounds like your husband would qualify as a Category 1 user since he has had a spinal cord injury.
Medical marijuana exemptions are provided by Health Canada.
There are a couple steps involved. First of all, your husband’s doctor will need to agree and will need to fill out an authorization form. Your husband will need to apply to Health Canada. The process is similar to applying for a passport.
Once approved, your husband will receive an exemption card. The only legal means to obtain marijuana is directly from Health Canada, where seeds or grown marijuana can be obtained. Many continue to source their marijuana from the black market as the quality tends to be better.
