HYANNIS — A female pedestrian was taken to Cape Cod Hospital late Tuesday night in critical condition after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver on North Street, public safety officials said.
The woman was in a wheelchair or motorized cart when the crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m., according to Barnstable police officers at the scene.
More Times Breaking NewsSeveral police cruisers surrounded the scene of the crash between Winter Street and Barnstable Road Tuesday night. Pieces of the womans wheelchair or motorized cart appeared to be strewn about the side of the street.
The crash scene was located near the back parking lot of several downtown businesses, including the clothing store Puritan Cape Cod. Across the street is The Steakhouse Sports Bar.
As a heavy rain fell, several police officers were interviewing witnesses in the area shortly after the crash. No details about the type of vehicle or the driver involved in the crash were available Tuesday night.
The Hyannis Fire Department received a report about the crash at 9:53 p.m. The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital in critical condition, a fire department spokesman said.
